Stolen Instrument Attempt

July 19th, 2007

An attempted theft of survey instruments has been reported.  The following report was made by John R. Gargis, President of the Space Coast Chapter.

Yesterday (July 17, 2007) one of my crews was followed by 2 black males in a charcoal color Caravan. My party chief noticed the tail in Palm Bay on US 1 as he was driving north coming back from Vero. My crew proceeded to Coastal Instrument Supply Store in Palm Bay located some what off the beaten path.

The van parked just shy of the Supply Store. My crew exited their truck proceeded into the store in search of a GPS chord well aware of the tail. After the crew entered the store the van pulled into the parking lot of the supply store and aligned their vehicle with our truck and one of the men got out and started to walk to the front door.

At that moment my crew and the owners of Coastal all proceeded to the front door. The man at the van then motioned the other to return to the van and they then pull back out of the parking lot and parked across the street. One of the owners of Coastal then attempted to get the plate of the van by walking to the end of his property and looking at the van however it was parked facing him. At that moment he had an eye to eye encounter with the suspects and they clearly were not alarmed, holding their ground and not speeding away.

The supply store owner then felt it best to return to his shop. My crew finished their business and departed Coastal and once again the van tailed them. At this point my crew chief decided to head for Melbourne Police Head Quarters which is very close to our office. He attempted to slow down and provoke the suspects to pass him so he could get the tag and at that moment they turned around and headed the opposite direction.

These guys were very bold and determined. Lets all keep and eye out for this.

This incident followed by just days when the following was repoerted by Gary Krick, Southeastern Surveying & Mapping Corp:

3 black males in a dark van stole a total station from an Allstate Paving Survey team yesterday. They grabbed it out of the truck and ran while the Team was working 100 feet away in Orlando. This is the 2nd one in 3 days
